The Southern Chester County EMS Board of Directors presented Commendations to Two SCCEMS paramedics as well as 2 EMT's from Union Fire Company of Oxford Ambulance and West Grove Fire Company Ambulance Division for their actions at a serious motor vehicle accident on November 4th near Lincoln University On November 4th, MEDIC 94, the Union Fire Company of Oxford and the West Grove Fire Company Ambulance were dispatched to an auto accident reported serious with the vehicle on fire on Ashmun Avenue near Lincoln University. The first arriving units with Paramedics Ed Gouge and Mike Gerisch immediately assessed the scene as a multi-casualty incident with one patient ejected and two patients trapped in a burning vehicle. Paramedics Gouge and Gerisch immediately multiple initiated attempts to extinguish the fire and extricate the entrapped patients from the burning car. Their efforts were assisted by the second arriving EMS unit from the Union Fire Company of Oxford staffed by EMT John Poole and Nick Sawyer. For over 8 minutes before the arrival of the first fire apparatus the providers emptied approximately 12 fire extinguishers from their units as well as extinguishers thrown over the fence from students at Lincoln University. EMT Supervisor H. Barclay Hargreaves and Steve Jones from the West Grove Fire Company arrived on scene and immediately assisted Paramedic Gouge with a rapid extrication of a critical patient from an unstable scene to the landing zone.
The Southern Chester County Emergency Medical Services Board of Directors commended the actions of Paramedics Gouge and Gerisch and EMT's Hargreaves Poole, Sawyer, Jones for their outstanding duty performance and heroic efforts at a challenging incident. Their actions contributed to the survival of two critically injured patients and ensured the safety of the EMS responders.
