Charles Bortle passed away yesterday evening. Charlie served as a part-time.paramedic at MEDIC 94 in the late 80's. More importantly he served as an instructor, mentor and friend to many MEDIC 94 staff members. Charlie was one if the primary paramedic instructors at the former St Joe's paramedic school in Lancaster where many of the MEDIC 94 paramedics.
After the school closed, Charlie went on to a successful educational career at Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia. With his background in paramedicine, respiratory therapy and education, Charlie was known worldwide as an expert in Emergency Medical Services. Many textbooks and references have Charlie as one of their contributing authors.
Even with his illness over the past five years, Charlie used it as an opportunity to educate those about his condition and in typical Charlie fashion with intense detail. His illness did not slow him down as he still continuing to lecture and teach those in the medical community. Just this past April we were fortunate to have Charlie teach at the Medic 94 sponsored EMS Education Symposium in Avondale. Rookies and experience providers would always flock to Charlie's presentations where he combined exceptional intelligence and humor to engage his students. You always left his classes a smarter paramedic or EMT.
Rest in peace Charlie, you will be missed but your spirit lives on with the countless EMS providers that you touched, mentored and taught through the years.
