SCCEMS Wins 2009 Governors Award for Safety Excellence   By EMS Chief Bob Hotchkiss October 19, 2009   Southern Chester County Emergency Medical Services was awarded the 2009 Governor's Award for Safety Excellence at the Annual Governors Occupational Safety and Health Conference held in Hershey this week. This year the award was presented to 9 companies from across the Commonwealth whose organizational safety programs are determined to be exceptional. SCCEMS was announced as a semi-finalist in August. The selection committee from the Department of Labor and Industry performed a site visit as well as organizational safety review of all of the nominees in order to determine the winners. The finalist awards were presented in front of 1,500 conference attendees at the annual Governors Occupational Safety and Health Conference. On hand to accept the award was SCCEMS Board Chairman Karl Mehn, Community Board of Directors members Carol Eichinger and Allen Fowler, SCCEMS CEO Bob Hotchkiss, ALS Supervisor John Pierce and BLS Supervisor Barclay Hargreaves as well as Chester County Department of Emergency Services Deputy Director for Field Services Steve Webb who represented Pennsylvania Department of Health EMS Bureau Director Joe Schmider. The department recognized SCCEMS's efforts to maintain an accident free workplace, recognizing over 10 years of zero loss work days due to workplace accidents or illness. The committee also recognized the organizations' commitment to investing in safety equipment for the vehicles, providers and facilities as well as safety training for the SCCEMS staff and other community organizations. SCCEMS was the first emergency medical services organization in the Commonwealth to receive the Governors Award for Safety and Excellence. This recognition could not have occurred without the committment to safety from the entire southern Chester County emergency services community who 24/7 are challenged by a multitude of safety issues which must be addressed in order to provide our valuable community service. The efforts on behalf of the partnership between SCCEMS and West Grove Fire Company where SCCEMS provides EMT staffing were also recognized during the presentation.
