SCCEMS Paramedics Have Two Cardiac Arrest Saves in October utilizing new Therapeutic Hypothermia Protocol

By EMS Chief Bob Hotchkiss
November 18, 2009

Southern Chester County EMS paramedics successfully resuscitated two patients in October who were in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived on scene. Both of the patients were female and resided in New London Township. The SCCEMS paramedics involved on the first cardiac arrest on October 5th, Pam Hoadley and Gary Hartung successfully resuscitated the patient on scene and initiated the therapeutic hypothermia protocol while enroute to the Christiana Hospital. They were assisted on the scene by the Union Fire Company #1 of Oxford Ambulance and the West Grove Fire Company. After a one week stay in the hospital, the patient was discharged home. This was the first use of therapeutic hypothermia by pre-hospital paramedics in Chester County. The protocol involves cooling a patient with cold IV's and other cooling methods which improve patient outcome by slowing the damage from the cardiac arrest to the brain.
The second resuscitation on the 28th of October, was accomplished by SCCEMS paramedics John Pierce and Mike Gerisch along with responders from the West Grove Fire Company and the West Grove Fire Company Ambulance Division. When the SCCEMS crew arrived on scene, the family was providing CPR coached by Chester County 9-1-1 Calltaker Tara Domenico. This patient also regained pulses in the field after an aggressive resuscitation and the therapeutic hypothermia protocol was again initiated. The patient was taken to the Jennersville Hospital and later transferred to the Christiana Hospital where after a 10 day stay, she was discharged home to her family.
SCCEMS has experienced increased resuscitation rates on cardiac arrest patients over the past 2 years in part due to increased public CPR utilization as well as updated protocols and organizational investments in capital improvements in technology and equipment. The most valuable equipment which led to these successful outcomes were the dedication and experience of the SCCEMS paramedics involved and the other members of the team from the Union Fire Company #1 of Oxford Ambulance Division and the West Grove Fire Company and the West Grove Fire Company Ambulance Division.
