By EMS Chief Bob Hotchkiss
January 18, 2020

Today, SCCEMS Paramedics John Ryan and Jake Barnes, as well as Union Fire Co #1 Ambulance Division EMTs Mike Syska and Beth Case, were visited by a very special patient. On 23 November, Mr Curtis Greer went into cardiac arrest at his house in Oxford. Through the quick efforts of his wife and son starting CPR and calling 9-1-1 and the EMS patient care team of EMTs Syska and Case and paramedics Ryan and Barnes, Mr. Greer was resuscitated in the field. Aggressive care was continued by the EMS team while he was transported to the Christiana Hospital Emergency Department and Cardiac Care Team where he went an emergent cardiac catheterization. After 2 weeks in the hospital, Mr. Greer was discharged home. He is doing well with his recovery and wanted to stop by and thank his rescuers.
Ironically, Mr. Greer was one of the original Board of Directors when SCCEMS- Medic 94 was formed in 1983. As a long-time Ambulance Captain in the 1980's at the Avondale Fire Company, he was instrumental in the development of the community based advanced life support MEDIC 94 services in southern Chester County.
The chain of survival takes a team of citizens, basic life support, advanced life support and advanced medicine to save a life. In southern Chester County, the community is served by a Gold Standard EMS system of EMTs, paramedics and health professionals.
